RE: battery location & generator hitch

I'd be concerned about adding a generator sitting on a platform that's attached to the hitch at the rear of your RT. Adding weight that far to the rear will have a noticeable effect on steering. You may be talking about 300 lbs or more by the time you figure in platform, generator, and gasoline. The extra length kind of makes your unit a little harder to park in tight places too. Cost wise, the battery option is probably better but I'm not an expert on gel batts.

RE: OH to SD...route....and how late before snow?

I wouldn't worry about running in to snow conditions, enjoy your trip. If by the most remote chance you do run in to some bad weather, just stay put for a day or two like others have noted and enjoy the surroundings.

RE: BEST NATIONAL PARK?

I'll have to say that Yellowstone is the best national park, it's the granddaddy of all. The natural setting offers many things: Yellowstone River and Falls, Lamar Valley, Madison River, Old Faithful, the Mammoth area, and of course all the wildlife. To me it's just in a class by itself. To enjoy the park one must go early or late in the season, July and August are poor times to visit because of the large number of visitors and crowded roads, facilities, etc. Guess that because of it's size and the many different scenes that it is my favorite. Close seconds are Joshua Tree for it's uniqueness, Glacier for the mountains, and Olympic for the ocean and trees.

RE: Mount Rushmore to Glacier NP?

I'd plan on staying in the Black Hills one or two more days to enjoy more of the sights, two days travel to Glacier from the Hills is okay, but going from Glacier to YNP you need to add an additional day or two. There's much to see going from Glacier to YNP depending on which routes(s) you take. Madison Canyon Earthquake Area, Virginia City, Bannack, Big Hole Valley, Last Chance Gulch in Helena, Smokejumper Center in Missoula, Flathead Lake, Big Hole Battlefield near Wisdom, Bitterroot Valley, Missouri Headwaters SP near Three Forks, Lewis & Clark Caverns near Three Forks, and many other places. Don't try to get in a hurry going between the two parks, there's just too much to see and do between them. Enjoy your trip.

RE: Planning a trip to the No. California Coast in Oct

Another spot to visit is Fort Ross, site of an old Russian fort with lots of history when the Russians were settling part of the western coast from Alaska southward. It's been many years since we were there, hope it still is a good place to spend a few hours.

RE: Florida room for Roadtrek

The Florida Room is a very nice addition to your B, however it cuts down on the mobility if you want to leave the camp site to go to town, sightsee, etc. and return later. We opted for a separate screen room which takes about ten minutes to put up and when your B isn't present, it identifies the site as being occupied. A high quality screen tent is much less expensive than the Florida Room, and I think it takes up less storage space too.

RE: Yellowstone in October

jcrawford - West Yellowstone is the best location to shoot for, and sounds like Grizzly is probably the choice park. West is easy to drive to, and is located such that touring the park is very doable; the locations you mentioned in your original post are too far away from YNP to do the sightseeing efficiently. Take I-90 to Bozeman and then head south to West, have a great time in YNP!

RE: RV Washing?

Agree with several of the others that it isn't a good idea. When our MH gets dirty while traveling, I look for a truck wash where I can drive it in and give it a good wash. Wash it again when we return home, more thoroughly and give it a wax job too if needed (and I'm up to it).

RE: Columbia River Gorge

I believe that you're better off staying on I-84 on the OR side of the river, SR 14 on the WA side is narrow and west of Washougal gets kind of twisty. There are many places to stop on the OR side to enjoy the scenery and take a break from driving. If you were driving a small C or something besides an A with toad, then I wouldn't hesitate to recommend SR 14, as it has lots of interesting sites to visit too. But for convenience and a more enjoyable trip for the driver, stick with I-84, have a good trip!

RE: Bannack Montana (Photos)

adondo - Thanks for the pictures, have been to Bannack several times over the years and am glad to see that it still looks the same. When we lived in MT, I used to go antelope hunting a couple miles south of Bannack towards Grant, and have hunted elk/deer on the high ridges above Bannack. One thing that I never did was to go fishing downstream from Bannack in Grasshopper Creek towards Horse Prairie, supposed to be pretty good but you need to watch for the rattlesnakes from what I hear. You took some fine pictures, thanks again for sharing your trip with us!

RE: Camping in Oklahoma?

There are a number of Corps of Engineers parks on the reservoirs located on the Arkansas River in eastern OK. You will need to check the Corps web site or someplace to get more info. It's been a long time since we camped in OK, but the Corps CG's were pretty nice and not crowded.

RE: Mount Rushmore

A couple more places to visit on your trip to the Hills: Devils Tower on the west side near Sundance, WY and the museum at the School of Mines in Rapid City. This museum is noted for the displays of many fossils found in the region, really an educational experience and reasonably priced. Wind Cave NP is also well worth your time.

RE: Planning a fall trip...East or West??

Late September and the month of October are excellent times to travel the Pacific NW in addition to the Black Hills. Days are nice, nights are a little chilly sometimes. Glacier and Yellowstone are also good to visit, but many of the facilities will probably be closed down for the season, especially as others have noted, after September 30th. Don't know how you're travelling (MH, camper, pup, or what) so that will make a difference too. Check with the NPS and USFS on their CG's to see which are closed, etc. November can still be nice in the NW, but rain is to be expected some of the time.

RE: Montana:278 or 43 (westbound from I-15)

Taking the route that mtlogger suggested ((278 to Wisdom, then 43 to Lost Trail Pass), take a side trip to Bannack just west of Badger Pass. That is the site of the first territorial capital. Go about 4 miles south of 43 on a good paved county road and see the shost town preserved as a state park. There are remains of old placer mining operations, plus a small campground to enjoy yourself. Another CG to stay at if you wish is just west of the Big Hole Battlefield, it's run by the USFS and can accomodate most any size of unit. Have a good trip, you're going to be in some beautiful country!

RE: Fiber glassing over top windows in older RT 190 Independent

Not sure, but there must be some treatment for the rubber gasket material that will prevent deterioration, or at least slow it down significantly. Go to a good automobile glass shop and have them install new factory gaskets from Home & Park, unless they perhaps can get you better material from their sources. Wonder if the factory is sending you stuff that wasn't stored well and is subject to premature failure. I wouldn't remove the glass and fiberglass over it, sounds expensive and will create more darkness too. Hope things work out.

RE: Having trouble justifying costs

Guess that we're like all the other folks that have posted to this thread. Our B is an investment in pleasure, not to make money. Worked hard for many years to save up for an enjoyable retirement and we're glad to have our B. We really enjoy traveling and seeing the countryside, there are so many great places in North America to visit. Staying in a nice state or federal CG is much more enjoyable than a motel; no suitcases to carry and unpack/pack, food is better, and the scenery is super. Investment wise, it's been close to a tossup for us. We purchased a nice used PW for a little over $30K, and yes it's probably only worth about $20K now. Took some money out or our IRA to pay for it rather than financing. Since we were losing money in the IRA, especially this past year, the depreciation of our B is partly offset by not watching the decline in value of the IRA. At least we get to see where our money is instead of on a piece of paper! As someone suggested, you should rent a B for a week or two to see if you're really into the RV travel enjoyment mode, if not then you haven't lost anything. I know it's a big decision, but look at it as a lifestyle investment, the bottom line will be fun oriented not dollars and cents.

RE: Dodge City, Kansas

On your way through Kansas, stop in Hutchinson (just north of Wichita) and visit the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center. It is affiliated with the Smithsonian and is well worth a stop to view and learn about American and Russian space exploration. Allow several hours, it is worth every minute of your time. Just seeing a full-sized replica of the space shuttle is inspiring. They have a web site, think it's called cosmos.org or something like that.

RE: Traveling south from Mt. Vernon, WA to Las Vegas end of Nov.

We made the trip last spring and drove down I-5 to Olympia area, then over to US 101 which we drove all the way down past Eureka. Trip was great and the OR SP's are sure nice places to spend the night, no reservations needed that time of year. Getting from US 101 over to Las Vegas can be done several ways, we ended up in Death Valley and Joshua Tree NP's, not too far from LV, but took a rather long way to get there since we visited relatives in the Reno area. Others will no doubt have good ideas on best route to LV if you take US 101 south to northern CA, so will leave that up to them. Have a good trip!

RE: Roads in Yellowstone

Definitely go to West Yellowstone from the south, either route noted above thru Dubois or Jackson. Would avoid the Sylvan Pass routing from the east.
